About Us

History

BASA Soccer was formed in the spring of 1992 and comprised of just a single U12 boys team that played in the Champlain Valley Soccer League and was coached by John Appleton and Paul Hutchins. Mike Barcomb helped with the administrative duties for the first year of the club as well.

Since this was the pre-internet days all the parents and players simply turned up a paid at the first practice in late April. The team wore light blue t-shirts that first year, practiced on the front lawn of the Rock of Ages (where the visitors center is now), and did not have a home field that entire season.

The spring of 1993 brought a second team and Dave Bullis came on board to coach as well. This second season brought many of the same challenges as the first and most times we found ourselves outside practicing at the Barre Town School parking lot in between the snow banks. In preparation for this season the players all sold candy bars to raise enough money to by the clubs first real uniforms, teal and black Patrick brand shirts which fit the style of the time perfectly.

1995 brought in Peter Kim, a recent graduate of the UVM Men's Soccer team, to cut his teeth coaching with out U14 boys team alongside John Appleton and Paul Hutchins. Before going on to work for other larger clubs, found the Capital Soccer Club, and eventually become the head coach of the Middlebury College Women's Team.

Although girls were always welcome to play on the boys team, the club fielded its first all girls team in 1996.

Rob Moran, Eric Bagley, Dan Roy and Jamal Jacobs began to direct the club in the the late 90's and early 00's before Dave Bullis returned to the club and helped form a Board of Directors to help distribute the work of managing the club.

The club became an official 501 (C)3 in 2016 thanks to the diligent work of Bill Durbrow.

In partnership with Challenger Sports we hosted our first and very successful soccer camp in the August of 2019.

Special Thanks

The club would also like to thank Beth Hulbert and Phil Acebo for helping out in the early years with getting the club fields to play on and space to play during the colder months of the year.

Thanks to Peter Sakash for coaching and helping organize the club for many years even though he didn't live in the community and last but not least Dave Bullis and Rob Moran for running the club for many years without much help.
